ooh, an old-school-Facebook clone! interesting

(side grumbling: some FOSS projects really don't spend a lot of time thinking about picking names that are easy to pronounce/understand for international audiences, right? Smithereen, SecureScuttleButt...)

@hisham_hm Smithereen is a VK clone by a Russian developer. What is unpronounceable about it?

@liaizon I'm not alone in the sentiment: plural.masdivago.cc/posts/41243

I didn't say it was "unpronounceable", but I can clearly see that it is tricky for people who are not fluent in English. A Portuguese speaker who doesn't speak English would definitely have a hard time with this name; I imagine it's the same for many languages.

Take in contrast names which are made of simple A1-level words: face-book, blue-sky...

@liaizon if I may play the game of sommelier of name i18n, here's my take:

easy:
VK
TikTok
Facebook
BlueSky
Mastodon
Telegram
X (sigh - it's stupid but easy)

medium:
Twitter
Pleroma
Baidu
WhatsApp

hard:
Douyin
LinkedIn
SecureScuttleButt
Smithereen
BookWyrm

Cochise

Hisham, I have to check if I wrote it correctly all the times... 😑

@hisham_hm @liaizon @Cochise naming things is one of the two hardest problems in computer science. The other two being cache invalidation and off-by-one errors.

It's named after a fictional social network from Black Mirror. I initially copied the logo as-is, but ended up redrawing it twice since to make it look nicer, and chose a different shade of green. Later I realized it's also a good name because "a smithereen" is a tiny part of something larger, the fediverse in this case.
