We just put out a big update for the Mastodon Android app! A lot of this was based on feedback from Play Store reviews. Give it a shot, it's a really strong update.

- New option to use our color theme instead of Material You
- Support for the color contrast setting in Android 15
- You can now crop your profile picture when editing your profile
- You can now long-press "Add media" in the composer to bring up the file picker
- New look for the media viewer
- New follower notifications will now appear grouped
- Directional loading for gaps in timelines: load newer posts when scrolling up, older when down

in the new QR code sharing feature, there’s a slight particle effect. we use the outer space metaphor quite a bit when talking about the fediverse, so we figured this starfield simulation would be a nice way to tie it all together.

there’s another detail i like on this screen but i’ll leave that as an exercise to the reader.

as always, @grishka did a stellar job implementing this UI

New change landing in Mastodon for Android soon! In user testing, people have expressed confusion over “why are all the handles so long?”

We're presenting handles on profile pages in a new style, with the username and server separated. Tapping the server will show you more details, along with a neat easter egg animation when you tap the rows.

@grishka did a phenomenal job on this animation 🙏

@samhenrigold @grishka is “handle” the official user-facing term? I generally say “username” to refer to the whole thing when speaking colloquially (especially to non-techies), similar to Threads’ explanation

but I also get that be confusing when explaining the username + server part…

Screenshot of my Threads profile, with bottom sheet visible showing message:

Soon, you'll be able to follow and interact with people on other fediverse platforms, like Mastodon. They can also find you with your full username @rileytestut@threads.net.

@samhenrigold I like the word "community" instead of "server" a bit better, especially for non-technical people. Have you thought about a less technical term? :) but I love the idea behind this change 👍
