I think one of my professional highlights of this year was the moment @mike and I came up with the fediverse:creator tag over lunch in San Francisco, and the subsequent implementation with my team. I love seeing that feature in action, besides being useful for discovery it just looks so nice.

@Gargron @mike Mine stopped working after a few weeks, not sure why, but I still see them on other people's posts now and again, but much less often than before.

The Material You redesign of our Android app came out quite early in the year but it's another highlight. I maintain that it must be one of the most beautiful apps on Android. The design is so clean. And the whole app is just 5MB. It makes me wish I had an Android phone. @samhenrigold and @grishka really hit it out of the park.

@Gargron @mike is the tag an image? If so I would love to see it

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

@Gargron Still the problem is Mastodon. See github.com/mastodon/mastodon/d.

Please see these issues (two of them are created by me and are related) as well:

*Require blocking of disposable email providers and/or require a captcha provider when registrations are open*

*Set new registrations on new servers to manual approval by default*

*Ability to greylist new servers*

*Ability to use heuristic spam filtering tools*

*Instance-wide filtering*

@Gargron but attackers can setup mastodon with different domains to go on spam the fediverse

@Gargron@mastodon.social yeah and sadly it's a very clever one, we can't do much about it as messages are coming from different users, from different servers, and it has no text only an image, so we can't even filter that :(

There were two notable moderation incidents on mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the past 24 hours that I would like to address. In the first, a post was wrongfully removed due to a report claiming it contained a dogwhistle, and in the second, a person was wrongfully suspended due to a report claiming it's an impersonator. Both were undone and apologies issued.

The moderation team is bigger than ever and so is the amount of reports we have to process. We're dealing with unprecedented growth despite having closed registrations on these servers weeks ago. Some false positives are unavoidable, but we understand these mistakes are upsetting and unacceptable, and we are trying to do better. Luckily all moderator actions can be appealed and reversed.
