At this point I think I'm done with profile fields in #Smithereen.

How I imagine the user story for every large social media platform adding autoplaying videos that often can't be disabled: as an Instagram user, I want videos in my feed to start playing automatically but muted so that I always miss the first several seconds of audio should I want to hear it.

Gregory

Instagram in particular is the worst offender:
- Stories on the web are always muted. Always. And there's no seeking so you can't easily restart the video after unmuting it.
- On the contrary, in the Android app, if you unmute one video in your feed, you're actually setting a global "sound is unmuted" flag, so that when you encounter another video 10 posts later, you get startled by it autoplaying with sound.
- In the app, if you have the RINGER set to silent, stories are muted. WHY TF.

@grishka autoplaying anything sounds more like "user engagement metrics"-driven feature that a user story-driven one. Like, nobody wanted it, but some studies probably showed that people spend more time in the app when it has moving pictures, or something.

In a similar vein, I don't think anyone ever wanted to have stories in non-social-media apps! But like every second bank app I've seen has those for some reason.

VK is so obnoxiously heteronormative when it comes to the relationship status on your profile.

Gregory

And some languages are more complicated than others 😅

Braw :blob_cat_melt: 🏳‍🌈

@grishka back in the day I asked their support why when you don't pick your partner it wouldn't just say smthn along the lines of ‘In a relationship’ (В отношениях) rather than ‘Has a girlfriend’ (Есть подруга), and they said it's by design and won't be fixed, and suggested to actually specify my partner

Obviously I wouldn't want to expose my ex or myself, and having him reduced to a ‘girlfriend’ was kind of yikes, so I just left this field empty, not that it matters anyway lmao

Gregory

Do I though? If the letters can be read and the images can be seen just fine without it, then what exactly do you mean by "view this site"?

Gregory

But what if I don't want this site to "run", I only want it to show me text and images, which it does do perfectly fine without JavaScript?

@drahardja it's wrong a lot but it's still right way more often, enough that it saves me a ton of time using it for things,
erica_sea55

@drahardja inevitably pushed by people who know nothing about how it works (aka bosses).

As someone who has a very general idea of how US politics works — does this conviction prevent Trump from running for the president in the upcoming election?

Anne Ominous

@grishka no but funnily enough, he may no longer be able to vote.

and there are countries that bar felons from entry.

felons also cannot get a secuirty clearance.

there will be complications.

New profile fields in #Smithereen.

(totally incompatible with the rest of the fediverse, but that's fine I guess)

autotools be like

checking for number system base ... base 2
checking for signed integer system ... twos complement
checking for galaxy ... milky way
checking for laws of the universe ... standard model

@unnick ... checking current value of pi... same as last time...

@unnick Mine also checks for the universe for consistency, and UID, and fails if it's not 0 (Universe MPI Master).

So much legacy that it still thinks you might be running it on an obscure mainframe from the 70s that uses an even more obscure C compiler ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm adding new profile fields to #Smithereen, so I would like to ask the fediverse about what kinds of contact info one would expect to be able to add to their profile. So far I've seen:
- Personal website/blog
- Matrix
- XMPP
- Telegram
- Signal
- Phone number
- Twitter
- Email

I've not yet seen these in fediverse profiles but they are mainstream enough that won't hurt to add:
- Instagram
- Facebook
- VKontakte
- Snapchat
- Discord

Is there anything I missed?

@grishka leidinger.net/blog/publication has a pretty extensive collection of social network links in the side pane of the blog.

technicat

@grishka I would like to link to all my other fediverse profiles (mastodon, bookwyrm, pixelfed...)

Doing a very cursed thing because people keep asking me to make my NearDrop app work on Catalina (would be funny if it overwrites my Mojave install anyway, it really acts like I'm not supposed to have multiple OS versions on a single Mac, even though this is what Apple officially allows)

Gregory

I did make it work in the end. I don't know why the background is peeking through. Enabling layers for these NSTextViews didn't do anything. If anyone with expertise in Apple UI frameworks knows how to fix it, please tell me. It doesn't do this on Ventura.

Now I can safely forget about this project for 6 more months, until Google breaks their shit on the Android side again.

So, #Smithereen no longer requires a username when signing up. You instead get assigned one automatically, of the form "idXXX" where XXX is the ID for your user record. You can change it later in settings if you wish. Current Mastodon versions handle this change no problem.

The username is only visible in two places:
- The URL of your profile
- When someone mentions you
So it's not very important. Definitely not important enough to be a required field when you register.

Here I have a first and last name. I have an email. I have a phone. And there's no nickname. Where can I get a nickname? Where is it given out?

It is believed that I have to come up with it. But why? What is the use of a nickname? Can't you generate a UUID and write your first and last name in the message?

Dear websites, there's exactly zero cases when I would like to download a PDF instead of viewing it in the browser. Don't do it. Just don't.

(if I'll ever make my own web browser, it would intentionally lack support for the Content-Disposition header)

readonly

@grishka это ты ещё не видел PDF внутри zip :D

eve massacre

@grishka For me it's exactly the opposite. I always get annoyed when it opens in the browser. The only case where I want that would be on the phone.

Gregory

The only good thing about the endless scope creep of the web is that modern web browsers have enough features to allow a Flash player to be built.

Here's an unpopular opinion: Google is outstandingly terrible as the maintainer of Android. Android needs to become a separate entity, preferably a nonprofit, and preferably run by someone who has strong opinions.

Frankly, I’d rather see the majority of FAANG’s services to be nonprofit entities. There is an entire book about that topic, so your opinion is not that unpopular

masukomi

@grishka I spend my time over in iPhone land. Is there some sort of short summary you can give or point me to as to why this is the case?

To be clear, I am not doubting or challenging you. I am just ignorant on the topic.

Gregory

You can now choose how you see comments in #Smithereen. This is most probably very buggy.

Gregory

Why do some news websites make random words links to lists of articles on the topic of that word? Does anyone ever intentionally click these, or is this just some weird form of SEO?

Gregory

I was told on Twitter that this boosts PageRank of each individual article because articles link to each other. Otherwise only those articles that have many links from the outside would rank high.

So yes, a SEO technique.
