@Gargron will further registrations on this server be closed forever, or is there a known time frame?

@randahl you can always register on another server (preferably smaller, so it's better moderated) and you still can use all the amazing federated features Mastodon can offer, and it'll ease the server load on the mastodon.social instance

@randahl @Gargron I do not know, but is there any good reason anyone might want to join these instances in the near future? No intention to badmouth them here, but ATM everything seems speak in favour of smaller instances, as I see it.

@hllizi I just like the easy to remember name of this server, and since I am already here, I'd like to add any future accounts to the same instance.

@hllizi @randahl @Gargron if the large instances did everything perfectly, I'd recommend joining a smaller instance.

@randahl @Gargron It might be a good idea to keep them closed for an extended period for load balancing. I'm on a smaller server that is focused on the region where I live, which means that when I browse "Local" I see people who are (mostly) actually local.

@not2b I see completely how that would make sense in the US, Joe. However, I live in the tiny country of Denmark (5.8 million people), and so far we only have 3 servers with very few users, and I just do not know if those instances will still be running, say, two years from now. That is why I joined the main server.

@randahl Perhaps that could change if Mastodon continues to expand, especially once there's a significant population that wants to mostly write in Danish (which might not include you). If Musk is successful in killing off Twitter perhaps that will happen.

@not2b @randahl Sorry to intrude in this conversation. Twitter rumors are running wild on twitter that Elon Musk is considering offering a merger between truth social and twitter itself. Hard to confirm at the moment. Just wanted to give a possible heads-up.
